Australian Blackwood – February 2022 planting

After the Black Wattle, I was worried that I hadn’t given the seeds the best chance. So this time I did some research on the actual tree, and how to plant it. Which ended up confusing, or possibly exhausting my patience, because I didn’t get a best method. But the seeds are cheap, and the marginal cost is basically nothing, so this one’s going to be an actual experiment.

Plenty of trees around here.
These seeds end up growing like grapes.
…except not at all juicy.

Question: Do Australian Blackwood seeds grow best after being crushed, or being scored (sanded)?

Method:

Step 1. Get Seeds.

About 100 I think.

Step 2: Divide into 2 groups.

In hindsight I ask “Where’s the control?”

Step 3: Lightly crush group A

Yes, the hammer is lightly crushing. What’s your point?

Step 4: Sand group B.

This didn’t actual make a visible difference, but I assume something happened. Maybe this is the control?

Step 5: soak overnight in warm water.

It was only warm at the start of the night. Then it cooled.

Step 6: Plant

The label is backwards in the photo… is this crushed?
Edit: definitely crushed… that N looking bit is my backwards ‘h’
Or maybe this one?
Edit: this is the sanded one.

Step 7: Wait.
