Narrow Leaf Ash – February 2022 Pre-planting

Inspired by the success of the pepper tree seeds, and the general summer environment, I harvested some more seeds from local trees to see if they will plant. This particular lot is from a Narrow Leaf Ash.

It turns out this one is tricky to get to germinate. Searching for a guide, I found this page, which gives these steps:

  1. Let the keys (seed pods) ripen on the tree until they are brown
  2. Debunch into separate seeds
  3. Soak for 2 days in cold water
  4. Put in a pretreatment pot (layer of stone, layer of sand, layer of compost/sand/seeds, layer of sand)
  5. Keep it for a for a summer and a winter, watering if it dries out
  6. Plant the following spring

So I made a couple of mistakes even getting this far. I harvested a mix of green and brown seeds, and I did it in mid-summer. But I’m still optimistic.

Soaking in cold water in the fridge.
Soaking complete.
Stone and sand in the pot
1 part seeds, 2 parts compost, 2 parts sand
Seed mix into the pot
Finished and watered.

Let’s check in next year.

And while I’m here, here’s some reference photos of Ashes:
